Furnished two bedroom apartment/house in Pretoria

I am considering a job offer in Pretoria. I will appreciate your help.

What is the price range for a nice, safe, furnished two bedroom apartment/house in a good area? Also, is it possible to have a driver and car available when needed? (rather than buying a car or always taking a taxi?) If so, how much would this be?

Thanks, Tracy

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for using Pretoria SA expat blog.

The security security or gated communities are the safest places to live in currently (Jan 2010) in Pretoria or South Africa. An unfurnished 2 bedroom could cost you from R4500/month (sorry I will use South African currency). That's about US$650 currently. Furnished 2 bedroom townhouses will start at R8 000/month or so. You are unlikely to pay more than US$1500 for a 2 bedroom house even in the safest area.

About the transportation, a taxi is just not advisable in South Africa at the moment. You may use a metered taxi, but a general public transport minibus system will be very confusing at the least. And the metro buses are not widely available. Most expats get their own cars immediately but getting a driver is also possible. I think a metered taxi may also work well. Most South Africans and SA expats get their own cars. I know how bad that is for the environment, but our public transport system is still being improved on.

If you use a metered taxi every day, to and from work, you may pay about R600/day depending on the distance you cover and traffic. This is really pure guesswork as traffic is quite heavy in the good areas of Pretoria. I will try and email you more accurate figures in a day or so. But in my opinion, a metered taxi option could be temporary. The easiest thing to do is getting accommodation close to your workplace. Or maybe getting a driver and a car, which may be more convenient. But a lot more expensive as you have to pay the driver and the car.

Hope this helps.

Leasing cars in Pretoria

Yes, you may enter into a car lease contract. You either buy or lease. Leasing cars is very popular with businesses in South Africa. There might be some advantage that it gives to business entities.
