Christian Brothers College Mount Edmund

Christian Brothers College Mount Edmund is one of the high schools in Pretoria East. It is also one of the private high schools in Silverton. Please check our full directory for public and private schools in Pretoria below. It was in 1917 that Bishop Cox and Father Ryan OMI suggested to the Christian Brothers to build a school in Pretoria. In 1921, The school building began in Lynnwood Road. They dedicated the new College to St Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows who was just canonized that time. On September 8, 1922, 56 pupils started school. Mass was held in one College classroom at 6:00 am, afterwards, the classrooms and Brother’s house were blessed. Classes were from Standard 3 to Junior Certificate. The College presented the first class for the Matriculation Examination of the Joint Matriculation Board in 1925.

In the mid 1960s, The University of Pretoria immediately needed that property for their expansion and provided an alternative agricultural site near Silverton, the Brothers took over the new site in 1968. In July 1969, the third term started in the new College and the following January, the very first boarders came. The principal, Brother Smith, was able to rehouse a mature college using great traditions in a modern environment. The College was given the name Mount Edmund to honor Blessed Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers. The Brothers were worried by the disparities in the education system of South African, so they decided to slowly withdraw from their white schools and gave them to laypeople who would operate the school as Catholic School.

Under the leadership of Brother McCarthy, each aspect of the school was re-evaluated, rejected or accepted. The rod and the cane were set aside for the concept of self-discipline and a more individualistic approach. Because of this, CBC Mount Edmund could then meet the events in South Africa in 1994. The College celebrated its 80th year. Their motto is “Act manfully.” Their 2010 enrollment was 710, and these were Grade RRR to Grade 12.
